I worked on this painting for 11 months in my free time. Every hour spent on it was a great pleasure, but I am very happy to finally see it finished. I made this piece as a small “thanks” to Michelle Sagara for creating wonderful, unique worlds, and the captivating characters in her novels, particularly my most favorite series, the Chronicles of Elantra.
I love all the characters (positive or negative) from the Elantra series, but the above 13 are my most favorite.
From left to right, top to bottom, the characters are as follows:
Kayling, Hope (the little dragon), the Eternal Dragon Emperor, Emmerian, Diarmat, Sanabalis, the Arkon, Ballusdeo, Makkuron (the black dragon), Tiamaris, Evarrim, Teela, the Consort and lastly, Nighshade.
Many thanks to the wonderful Michelle Sagara, who kindly sent me a detailed description of the Eternal Dragon Emperor and Emmerian, both characters, which did not yet appear in the novels, but were only spoken of. Strange how I can love them so, even though neither the Emperor nor Emmerian ever spoke so much as a word in the novels. Still, they just have a “presence” that I am totally fascinated by, particularly the Eternal Dragon Emperor.
Long live the Elantra Series and Michelle Sagara for writing such an amazing story and characters. I can't wait for Cast in Flame. XD
Your art for this series is just amazing! They made me aware of these books and I started to read them and I really, really love them (thanks a lot for that!)! I think you catch each character just perfectly, though I'm sadly not finished with all of the books, since I have to study for upcoming exams.
I can understand your interest in the Eternal Dragon Emperor, he seems to be like a very interesting character, when spoken of.
Thank you so much for your absolutely awesome art!
Thank you ever so much for the wonderful compliments! I am overjoyed to hear you like the way I represented the characters, and I am happier still that I was able to introduce you to a series you enjoy!
Thank you ever so much for the wonderful compliment! Oh, I am rather obsessed with the Elantra series, so loads more art will be forthcoming. XD I am really happy to hear that you like how I represent the characters.
I always come here to look at your art when I finish a Chronicles of Elantra book, and it always amazes . The dragons really stand out me in this piece, they are my favorite characters. I particularly love what you did with Tiamaris's hands.
Thank you so much for the honor and wonderful compliment. I am overjoyed to hear you like the way I represent these characters. I am sure it won't come a surprise for me to say that the Dragons are my favorite characters too.... But I guess this is rather obvious from how obsessively I keep painting them. More Elantra artwork is on the way, and it again has Kayling and the Dragons as a main focus. XD
oh wow! This is beyond impressive. What media did you use to paint this? I don't think I used to view the city they lived in like the buildings that you have depicted but now don't think that I could not see it this way. Do you have any of the fiefs? In particular fief nightshade and fief tiamaris?
Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment. I painted this entirely in Photoshop with a Wacom digital tablet.
As for the city/fiefs: My view of Elantra, as well as the fiefs is continuously changing. I started this painting a year ago and it took an entire year to finish (mostly because I was only working on it in between commissions in my free time). By the time I finished it, there are some things I'd like to change because my view of them changed. For example, the Arkon's hair, Sanabalis' beard and clothes, the Dariandaros' clothes, and the city behind Dariandaros. My view of Elantra shifted, and I imagine the streets differently now. But if I were to always go back and change the paintings whenever my view of something changes, I'd never finish a painting. XD How did you imagine Elantra and the fiefs, if you have any visual references you could show me? I am also very open to suggestions and new inspiration.
This is.... I have no words for how awesome and beautiful this is~. The Chronicles of Elantra is my FAVORITE book series of all time. All your work is amazing, but your work of this world is always so wonderful and I always get excited to see it.
Oh, they Elantra series is my MOST favorite series of all time too! I can't stop obsessing over it. XDD And I am SO highly inspired. I just need to read a couple of paragraphs from the book, and at least 3 possible paintings pop into my mind. Pity there's not more hours to a day. *sigh* Ah well.
Thank you so much for your wonderful compliment on my Elantra paintings. I am so happy I can bring some joy with them to others.
Exactly! That's what I am doing as well; i.e., rereading parts of the book, particularly does parts which I really enjoyed. I don't know why the novels appeal to me so much. I've read other books by Michelle Sagara/West, and I love them, but this series... it's like every character in it (with Kaylin, the Dragons and the Barrani at the top), SING to my soul! I can't stop obsessing over them. XD
But anyway. I hope you enjoy Cast in Flame. I am not sure how you feel about spoilers, so I will not say anything specific here, but there's an awesome encounter at the end of the book between Kaylin and someone. XD
I totally know what you mean~!! XD Not gonna lie, I daydream about the books and that world all the time. It's just.... such an amazing and wonderful story~. Aaaaaah~.
My mom read the book before I got my copy. And she normally doesn't tell me anything that happens, but she told me who Kaylin meets...... I started squealing and flailing my arms. Stopped breathing for a little bit while that was going on... >_> lol BUT, I've started it now!! And so far, loving it~!! So many parts make me giggle. :3
I think I spammed u enough on facebook lol so i'll keep it short here XD ahhh! so beautiful! <3 Loved seeing Emmerian here, speaking of, have u read the first chapter preview for Cast in Flame? ahhh!! o(^__^)o
Lol. Thank you so much for all the 'spamming'. I really appreciate it and I always love hearing what you've got to say, especially about Elantra; an obsession that refuses to go away. lol. Oh yes, back then i did read it, and I loved it. I was so excited (with butterflies in my stomach)! Have you read the book? I think I read 3 times. I loved the scenes with Emmerian and Dariandaros. I literally had a tear of joy rolling down my face when I realized that it was Dariandaros standing beside the Arkon. XDDD
Thank you ever so much for the wonderful compliment and comment. I am overjoyed to hear that you like my painting, and happier still that I could bring some joy with it. The Elantra series is definitely my most favorite series ever, and I am super happy to share the love.
